“For the most part, where you voted in April is where you’ll vote at in June,” Czarny said.

He said he would love to see that turnout for Tuesday’s primary but doubts it will happen, despite the significance of the primary.

“Down ticket races are just as important, if not more important,” Czarny said. “The decisions that are made by your local representatives are going to affect you much greater on an everyday basis than the presidential office might. It’s incredibly important that you get informed, decide which of the candidates you support and go out and support them.”

Czarny said he noticed a large push on social media for unaffiliated voters to go out to the polls and vote using affidavit ballots. On one hand, he said it shows enthusiasm from people who might not have voted in the past, but they also don’t seem to know the election rules.

He said the Board of Elections dealt with a lot of unaffiliated voters and affidavit ballots throughout the day, which proved to be difficult. Some of them chose to come down to the office and file a court order to have their vote be counted.

“That thing has really been our day,” Czarny said. “It’s frustrating because we have a brisk amount of court orders.”

New York Primary Preview – WSYR9

Voting will happen from 12pm to 9pm.  New York State is a closed primary state meaning that you have to be registered in a political party and voters will only be able to choose a candidate in that particular party.

‘Passive Electioneering’ could keep you from voting – WSYR9

Democratic Onondaga County Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny says, “You’re not allowed to do that within 100 feet of the polling place. There’s distance markers outside the doors and if you show up with that, elections inspectors are going to either ask you to either take off your buttons or even turn your shirt inside out because there is no electioneering allowed inside of a polling place and there never has been.”

Why Moving Village Elections From Spring to Fall Could Save Money, Boost Turnout – Spectrum News

What village officials can control though is when the election is held. Onondaga County elections commissioner Dustin Czarny says only about about 10 to 15 percent of the population votes in village elections. He believes that number would increase with a fall election.

“The villages would have zero costs to run their election, whereas they pay for all their election costs now, and the other big advantage is moving it to November will align it where when people are focused on the elections so better turnout as well,” said Czarny.

In contrast, throughout the entirety of 2015 — a non-presidential election year — there were about 10,500 new registered voters in Onondaga county, Czarny said.

Czarny said that because of excitement that circulates during the presidential election year, people are driven to vote. The numbers of those arriving on Election Day in Onondaga County may more than triple this year compared to a non-presidential election year, according to CNY Central.
