Oct. 26, 2020 – New Yorkers lined up at the polls across the state for the first days of early voting. We heard from Dustin Czarny, Onondaga County Democratic Elections Commissioner, on how his Central New York county fared in this first weekend of early voting.
“So if you have the ability to go to another site, .. go to Armond Magnarelli or Southwest Community Center, .. or go right off 81 into the Lafayette fire station. These are sites that are seeing less activity, and you may have less wait times.”
He also said voters who register through the state Department of Motor Vehicles sometimes fail to choose a party and the default is to land in the category of non-enrolled. The majority of registrations now come through the DMV.
“I’ll be arguing in front of the Legislature in January that they need to look at revamping the early voting law and mandating more sites, (along with expanded hours) These are the things that need to be resolved for next year and years beyond.”

“Then, we start opening absentee on November 9, and each day we will report unofficial results of what we get scanned in each day,” says Onondaga County Democratic Election Commissioner Dustin Czarny.
Onondaga County Board of Elections Commissioners Dustin Czarny and Michele Sardo are featured on the City of Syracuse’s latest episode of “Get the Facts.” The commissioners share need-to-know information related to the 2020 Election for voters who want their voices to be heard.
“About 1,000 people an hour filed through the county’s six polling sites in the morning and early afternoon, Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said.”
In an attempt to help alleviate long lines amid huge early voting turnout, Onondaga County already announced it will keep polls open for a total of four extra hours this coming weekend, opening sites at 8 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. “The overall number was a big surprise,” Onondaga County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny told WCNY. He added that people were lining up to vote even before polls opened, which happened throughout the state as well. “Obviously these are not lines we have ever been accustomed to in Central New York and we handled it really well,” Czarny said.
Onondaga County Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny suspects more people chose to vote in person than expected, as only 65,000 absentees have been requested of the 100,000 expected.
