“We have these electronic poll books that are going to make it more efficient,” said Onondaga County Board of Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny. “It’s going to save us money in the long run. And it’s going to make the Election Day experience even better for the voters. When you go into a polling place, you’ll be able to go to any electronic poll book and check in.”

“For the last 25 years of my life I have been a servant of two masters, elections and theater,’’ Czarny wrote. “For most of that time I have been able to do both, mainly through a lack of sleep and the ignorance of not knowing my limits.”
In addition to his job as a county elections commissioner, Czarny is the Democratic caucus chair for the New York State Elections Commissioner Association. He said he routinely works 50-60 hours a week on implementing recently authorized reforms to the elections system.
“Six months ago I made the decision that it was time to make a choice,” Czarny wrote on Facebook. “I will have to let theater go.’’

“We already have eight established political parties that can cross-endorse and then allowing (candidates) to have even more lines on the ballot would add to the length of the ballot, would add to the cost and I’m not sure it would be of any benefit to the voters,” (Czarny) said.

County business hours are 8:30 am 4:30 pm, but Czarny claims his workday has always been flexible.

Czarny said his job frequently requires much more than 35 hours a week. During the past two months he has worked 50-hour weeks to help prepare for new technology that will be used for the November election, he said. Czarny said he also has the flexibility to pick up an Uber ride during his lunch hour, or to work through his lunch hour and leave early.

Czarny said he often works odd hours because of the nature of the job.
