Voter registration deadline nearing – WRVO
“During the presidential primary, close to the end of the voter registration deadline, there were so many people using it, it crashed,” Czarny said. “And I think they’ve fixed those problems, but if you’re thinking of registering to vote don’t wait ’til the last minute. If you’re getting close to the deadline, it might be a better to print up a form from the website and put it in the mail.”

Primary day: Republicans and Democrats in central NY choose congressional candidates – WRVO
“For the most part, where you voted in April is where you’ll vote at in June,” Czarny said.
He said he would love to see that turnout for Tuesday’s primary but doubts it will happen, despite the significance of the primary.
“Down ticket races are just as important, if not more important,” Czarny said. “The decisions that are made by your local representatives are going to affect you much greater on an everyday basis than the presidential office might. It’s incredibly important that you get informed, decide which of the candidates you support and go out and support them.”
Practical Experience with Election Modernization – The Rockefeller Institute of Government
A discussion with Colorado Election Administrators Donetta Davidson and Matt Crane at the Rockefeller Institute of Government held on May 4, 2016. In addition, the panel also had Peter Kosinski, commissioner of the NYS Board of Elections; Todd Valentine, co-executive director of the NYS Board of Elections; and Dustin Czarny, legislative committee chairman of the NYS Election Commissioner Association. The event was moderated by John R. Dunne, Esq., former NYS Senator & co-chair of the NYS Bar Association Special Committee on Voter Participation. This event was co-sponsored by the Rockefeller Institute of Government, Common Cause, and League of Women Voters of NYS.

Czarny said he noticed a large push on social media for unaffiliated voters to go out to the polls and vote using affidavit ballots. On one hand, he said it shows enthusiasm from people who might not have voted in the past, but they also don’t seem to know the election rules.
He said the Board of Elections dealt with a lot of unaffiliated voters and affidavit ballots throughout the day, which proved to be difficult. Some of them chose to come down to the office and file a court order to have their vote be counted.
“That thing has really been our day,” Czarny said. “It’s frustrating because we have a brisk amount of court orders.”

New York Primary Preview – WSYR9
Voting will happen from 12pm to 9pm. New York State is a closed primary state meaning that you have to be registered in a political party and voters will only be able to choose a candidate in that particular party.

‘Passive Electioneering’ could keep you from voting – WSYR9
Democratic Onondaga County Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny says, “You’re not allowed to do that within 100 feet of the polling place. There’s distance markers outside the doors and if you show up with that, elections inspectors are going to either ask you to either take off your buttons or even turn your shirt inside out because there is no electioneering allowed inside of a polling place and there never has been.”

Voters registering in waves for New York Presidential Primary on April 19th – WSYR9
“We haven’t had this for quite some time. New York is in focus, and the only Primary happening on April 19th. It can really determine the race. I think you are seeing a lot of excitement on both sides of the aisle,” said Dustin Czarny from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.
