“Right now, I think there’s a good possibility that we will have to do a hand count,” Czarny said, adding that a hand count of the 166,607 ballots cast in the county would take a long time to complete.
“It could be weeks,” he said. “Let’s just say it will be ruining our Thanksgiving.”
Shelley’s campaign declared victory Tuesday night. County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said Wednesday that Shelley is the “presumptive winner.” This is Shelley’s fourth run for sheriff.
In state Senate race news, Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny tweeted Wednesday morning that both NY-50 and NY-22 are too close to call and that Onondaga County officials are “working diligently to provide numbers of outstanding absentees and affidavits for a Nov. 16 opening.”

When we reached out to the Onondaga County Board of Elections, Democratic Commissioner Dustin Czarny said by the end of Wednesday data should be available about any ballots still left uncounted, particularly in the close races for NY-50 and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s race.
“They have to go to their correct polling place. If you’re unsure go to onvote.net and you can look yourself up or give us a call at 315-435-VOTE,” says (D) Dustin Czarny, Onondaga County Elections Commissioner.
“What we’re hearing is incredible interest in these elections, but we have 149 polling places. They’re pretty well suited. They have the new technology in them, so I do think we’ll be able to handle the lines,” he said.

For the first time in a general election in the state, absentee ballots will be part of the returns announced after polls close. “The 10,000 that are already in the office, they’ll be counted and canvassed and reported out on Election Night. Any that come in today and beyond will still have to wait until November 16th for us to canvas those,” explained Czarny.
