Brief thoughts on primary turnout for Syracuse Democrats. Its actually good.

There has been a good deal of discourse around voter turnout in the City of Syracuse mayoral primary. So lets look at the facts as they stand according to data from the Onondaga County Board of Elections:

Number of Democrats eligible 39051

Number of Democrats who have voted 7792

Estimated turnout 19.95%

This will grow as affidavits and late arriving vote by mail are added to the count. Lets look at turnout in city wide mayoral primaries going back a few cycles

2021 14.73%

2017 22.69%

2013 18.56%

2009 24.41%

This puts this year’s primary squarely in the middle of the last five cycles. A marked improvement from 4 years ago but not quite as large as other years where there are open seats 2009 & 2017.

While no one is celebrating approximately 20% turnout, it is not abnormal for a primary. In fact it is expected average turnout.

But if you don’t want to look at just mayoral years lets do all the dem primaries in the City of Syracuse since 2009

2024 Federal 13.38%

2024 Presidential 5.83%

2023 local 13.10%

2022 Fed 16.26%

2022 State 13.09%

2021 Local 15.32%

2020 Combined 29.89%

2019 Local 13.19%

2018 State 26.11%

2018 Fed 19.86%

2017 Local 22.69%

2016 Fed 11.89%

2016 Pres 39.67%

2015 Local 13.69%

2014 State 11.13%

2013 local 18.56%

2010 State 14.08%

2009 Local 24.41%

So this Democratic primary is the highest since 2020 and higher than 13 of the last 18 primaries and two of the primaries that beat it are Presidential primaries.

If anything this year for Democrats in the City of Syracuse, this is an above average primary. Even if primaries themselves are below average elections I can’t see how the criticism of low turnout is a constructive or valid one.

Elections officials say they’re ready for Primary Day, despite high heat and humidity – WRVO

Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said he doesn’t remember voters venturing to polling places under such hot and humid conditions. But they’ve been preparing, by making sure all polling places are cool with extra fans on hand in case air conditioning goes haywire.

“It’s a smaller primary,” said Czarny. “Most of our buildings that we’re in are churches and schools that are already equipped for this.”

First weekend of early voting has high turnout – NCC News

Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny said this year has seen a better turnout then the past two primaries.

“For the first two days we had 384 people over the weekend. That’s actually pretty good for a primary,” he said. “If you compare it to the two other primaries that we’ve had early voting, 2021 we had 190 people 2023 we had 280 people over those first two days.”

One big reason why is the race for the Democratic Syracuse mayoral nominee. The race is between Common Counilors Pat Hogan and Chol Majok, and Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens.

Czarny said that race is fueling early voter turnout.

“Obviously the city of Syracuse mayoral race is the big one – 348 of those 384 were inside the city of Syracuse,” Czarny said.

American High CEO enters Liverpool mayoral race amid feud – News Channel 9

But the big question is– can Garelick even run? He currently lives in Cazenovia. NewsChannel 9 took that question to Onondaga County’s election commissioner

“He may be able to run, but the real question is, can he serve? Because you can run in New York State if you are not a resident of a political subdivision, said Dustin Czarny, “Sometimes villages have unique rules and that’s why we have to research this.”

Early voting begins Saturday ahead of June 24 primary in New York – WRVO

Onondaga County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dustin Czarny says voters registered in political parties will choose a number of candidates for the general election during this primary season.

“We have Democrats inside the city of Syracuse as well as County Legislature 8, Republicans in Elbridge, Cicero, and Pompeii, and Conservatives in Elbridge that have primaries this year,” said Czarny.

The most high profile race is in the city of Syracuse, where three candidates are hoping to win the Democratic line for mayor on the November ballot. It’s an open seat this year, because of term limits for current Mayor Ben Walsh. Still, Czarny expects only about 8,000 voters out of the city’s 40,000 registered Democrats will come out and vote.

“Primaries are one of the lowest voter turnouts of any of our election cycles,” Czarny said. “And since only the Democrats are eligible to vote in the primary, that shuts down the number quite a bit.”
