Early voting sets record for local election in Onondaga County – WRVO News

“This is a 41% increase from 2023, the last local year, and the last record, which was only about 12,000 early voters,” said Czarny.

Early voting became an option in New York State in 2019. Czarny said as the years have gone by, it’s grown in popularity among voters.

“They like the convenience of it,” he said. “We’ve kept basically the same sites for the last four years. So they know where the sites are, they know what the hours are, and campaigns are getting used to pushing their voters to early voting to make sure that they bank those votes before Election Day.”

Together We Can. Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Community First. Why so many independent parties? – WAER

It must be said that these are not independent candidates for the most part,” he said. “Most of these candidates appear on a major party line. And because of our unique system of fusion voting in New York, it allows their name to appear multiple times.”

Election 2025: Early voting turnout on record pace for local elections in Onondaga County – Syracuse.com

By the time polls closed Monday, 5,018 people had voted at the 10 polling sites in the county, topping the record of 4,025 for the same period in 2023, said Dustin Czarny, the county’s Democratic elections commissioner.

The total through Monday far eclipsed the early turnout for local elections in 2021 (2,703) and 2019 (2,649), when New York state began offering the early voting option.

As N.Y. state law is upheld, off-year elections aren’t really going anywhere just yet – Capitol Tonight Spectrum News

Czarny said that while he expects one intended result of the move —  higher turnout for the races which have been transplanted — to come to fruition, the other intended benefit — lower costs for local governments — will probably not be significant in the near term.

“Over the next five-10 years, I wouldn’t say cost savings is the main reason to do this,” he said. “We’re already opening up polling places for judicial candidates and city candidates in those odd years until those eventually get moved.”

Czarny added that he doesn’t anticipate the move will burden elections staff on even years, given that they have time to prepare for more complex ballots and potentially more voters.

“Boards of elections, we’re pretty adaptable, we have time,” he said.

Beyond the mayor’s race: What else Syracuse voters will decide this year – WSYR

“It sets a 12-year term limit. No one can serve in the county legislature for more than 12 years. The current term of office is now two years for a county legislator; it would now go to 4 years.

Czarny says that if the proposition is approved, it will go into effect in 2026.

“Next year we will have county legislature elections, but depending on what the voters choose, they’ll serve to 2028 or 2030, depending on what comes out of this election,” he said.

Election Commissioners share their opinions on NY’s “even year” election law, early voting – CNY Central

“It’s one of the reasons why I supported the even-year election law,” said Czarny. “To align some of these elections in even years when more people are planning to go to the polls, and some more can vote in these local elections.”
